Project Officer – Engineer (UNICEF WASH Project)

About the role

The Project Officer (Engineer) will lead technical surveys, design and supervise construction of water supply and school WASH facilities for a UNICEF‑supported humanitarian project. The role combines field engineering, quality control and capacity building to ensure safe, resilient water services for vulnerable communities.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct field engineering surveys, soil tests and hydrogeological assessments for water source development and tower foundations.
• Supervise drilling of deep tube wells, installation of solar pumping systems with VFD, steel‑structure towers, GRP tanks and uPVC distribution networks.
• Oversee construction and rehabilitation of gender‑responsive, disability‑inclusive, climate‑resilient school WASH facilities.
• Perform strict quality control on all WASH construction materials against BOQ specifications.
• Ensure compliance with UNICEF Environmental & Social Standards, OHS protocols and Sphere standards.
• Maintain photo logs and technical inspection records for audits.
• Provide hands‑on training to local pump mechanics, artisans and Village WASH Committees on operation, maintenance and water quality testing.
• Supervise third‑party contractors, coordinate with the Project Manager and technical specialists, and prepare weekly/monthly progress reports.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years experience in humanitarian response or WASH field operations.
• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or related field.
• Proven experience monitoring WASH infrastructure, conducting quality control and providing technical field support.
• Strong understanding of emergency response contexts and gender‑responsive, climate‑resilient design.
