Head of Underwriting

About the role

The Head of Underwriting will lead the underwriting function, shaping strategy, managing risk portfolios and driving profitability across all insurance lines. This senior position reports to senior management and is responsible for ensuring consistent, high‑quality underwriting decisions while fostering a culture of risk accountability.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute the corporate underwriting strategy aligned with profitability and growth objectives.
• Set department goals, KPIs, risk appetites and monitor performance.
• Lead all underwriting operations, ensuring technical excellence, consistency and process efficiency.
• Oversee risk assessment and underwriting lifecycle for Fire, Commercial, Motor and Non‑Motor portfolios.
• Formulate, update and enforce underwriting guidelines, SOPs and rating structures.
• Review and approve high‑value, complex or non‑standard risks within delegated authority.
• Manage portfolio performance, loss ratios and net technical margins.
• Collaborate with Actuarial, Finance and Claims to refine pricing models and manage reserves.
• Work with the Reinsurance team to negotiate treaty and facultative reinsurance arrangements.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies, strengthen internal controls and support audits.
• Champion digital underwriting initiatives, automated workflows and straight‑through processing solutions.
